Unde e? În, la, pe, din
Basic Prepositions of Place and Direction
The Vibe
Where is it? Where to? From where?
You describe where a book is, where you are going after class, and where you came from. In `A1_U12`, language starts connecting objects and places: `în clasă`, `la școală`, `pe masă`, `din centru`. This unit is about the basic geography of everyday life in Romanian.
By the end of this unit you can
- describe where an object or person is
- use `în`, `la`, `pe`, and `din` in core A1 scenes
- say where you are going and where you are coming from
- build short location and direction phrases
Core preposition map
At A1, you do not need every nuance. You need four routes that immediately cover class, home, a bag, a table, school, and the city.
| Function | Romanian | Example |
|---|---|---|
| inside a place | în | în clasă |
| at / toward a place | la | la școală |
| on a surface | pe | pe masă |
| from / out of | din | din centru |
| enter into | în + place | intru în cameră |
Grammar Hack
Use `în` when something is inside a space: `în clasă`, `în cameră`, `în geantă`.
For school, the shop, home, and similar everyday destinations, `la` often sounds natural: `merg la școală`, `sunt la magazin`.
When an item is lying on a table, chair, or shelf, `pe` is often the right choice.
This preposition gives you a starting point or source: `vin din centru`, `scot cartea din geantă`.
На этом этапе полезнее помнить готовые фразы о местоположении, чем абстрактную грамматику.
Where the topic becomes real right away
classroom, room, table, bag
Interior spaces and surfaces give the clearest entry point for `în` and `pe`.
- Cartea este pe masă.
- Profesorul este în clasă.
- Telefonul este în geantă.
school, shop, city center
For movement and direction, the unit relies on short everyday routes.
- Merg la școală.
- Vin din centru.
- Intru în cameră.

Nice to Know
In everyday Romanian, `la` is highly productive: `la școală`, `la magazin`, `la birou`, `la mine`. For a beginner, this is a useful shortcut: learn natural destination chunks first and refine the nuances later.
Mini dialogue: in school throughout the day
Notice: pe for surfaces (pe masă), în for inside spaces (în geantă), la for destinations (la magazin), din for origin (din centru).
The Real Deal
- ● sorting by `în / la / pe / din`
- ● matching a place cue with the correct phrase
- ● correction of the wrong preposition
- ● a mini route set with 2-4 short lines
Shadowing & Audio
Listen and repeat, clearly distinguishing `în`, `la`, `pe`, and `din`. Then try replacing one location in each line.
