`B2_U01` opens the level through soft negotiation. You learn to speak flexibly rather than sharply: suggest, request, disagree, and discuss hypothetical options.

By the end of this unit you can

  • build `aș, ai, ar, am, ați, ar` + infinitive forms
  • soften requests with `ai putea` and `ați putea`
  • suggest options with `am putea` and `ar fi util`
  • disagree politely without direct conflict
  • recognize direct, polite, and diplomatic register in listening

Conditional as a tone map

At B2, it matters to see not only form, but function: request, suggestion, hypothesis, soft disagreement.

Grammar Hack

The form is simple

`aș, ai, ar, am, ați, ar` + infinitive: `aș merge`, `ai putea`, `ar fi`, `am încerca`.

`aș vrea` is softer than `vreau`

This is not weakness; it is normal diplomatic register.

`ai putea?` gives space

It sounds as if the other person may refuse or suggest another option.

`am putea` builds cooperation

Instead of an order, it creates a shared plan: `Am putea pleca mai devreme`.

`aș vedea altfel` saves disagreement

The phrase lets you disagree without a direct `nu sunt de acord`.

Politeness ladder

Works with close people, but may sound sharp in email or negotiation.

  • Trimite-mi documentul.
  • Vreau să schimbăm ora.

polite

Normal neutral B2 level.

  • Ai putea să-mi trimiți documentul?
  • Aș vrea să schimbăm ora.

diplomatic

Better for work, email, and soft negotiation.

  • Ați putea să-mi trimiteți documentul când aveți timp?
  • M-ar ajuta dacă am putea schimba ora.

Nice to Know

In Romanian professional communication, the conditional often works as a softener. But if every line is too soft, the text may sound uncertain. Good B2 balance: soft request + clear action.
