When I arrived, everything had already happened

`B2_U03` adds a second past timeline. You learn to explain not only what happened, but what had already happened before: `plecase`, `uitasem`, `cumpărase`.

By the end of this unit you can

• build core mai mult ca perfectul forms
• distinguish a past event from an earlier past event
• explain a cause through backstory
• reconstruct event order in a story
• write a mini-investigation or biographical fragment

Two past timelines

First find the main past moment. Then ask: what had already happened before it? That is where `mai mult ca perfectul` appears.

Grammar Hack

`deja` is your marker

If your mind says `already`, you often need `plecase`, `începuse`, `cumpărase`.

`când` sets the main past moment

`Când am ajuns...` sets the moment, then we explain what had already happened.

`pentru că` opens backstory

`Nu am găsit biletul pentru că îl pierdusem` explains the cause.

Do not overload the story

For B2, 2-3 earlier events are enough; otherwise the story gets heavy.

Speech may be simpler

In conversation, people may use perfect compus, but this form is very useful for written clarity.

What happened in the past?

2. What had happened earlier

What had already happened before that moment?

• Trenul plecase deja.
• Îl uitasem acasă.

3. Conclusion or cause

Why does the reader need this earlier event?

• De aceea am întârziat.
• Așa am înțeles problema.
