I Go, You Read

Present Tense of Third and Fourth Conjugation Verbs

The Vibe

Study, work, commuting, movement

The day is now more dynamic: dormi puțin, citești în tren, mergi la curs, primești un mesaj, deschizi laptopul. In `A1_U08`, the present tense moves beyond the `-ez` pattern and starts covering other highly useful everyday verbs. This unit makes action language feel more alive and more natural.

By the end of this unit you can

  • use core third- and fourth-conjugation verbs in the present tense
  • talk about movement, study, reading, sleep, and simple daily actions
  • notice patterns in `-e`, `-i`, `-î` and forms with `-esc/-ăsc`
  • expand your routine language beyond a few starter verbs

Present tense: more live-action verbs

This unit adds highly useful everyday verbs that no longer all fit one visible pattern. The same strategy still works: less abstract chart learning, more real chunks.

Infinitive Core pattern Example
a merge merg, mergi, merge I go to class.
a citi citesc, citești, citește You read on the train.
a primi primesc, primești, primește She gets a message.
a dormi dorm, dormi, doarme I sleep a little.
a deschide deschid, deschizi, deschide He opens the laptop.
a porni pornesc, pornești, pornește We start early.
a coborî cobor, cobori, coboară They get off the train.

Grammar Hack

`-esc` is worth spotting early

Forms like `citesc`, `primesc`, and `pornesc` are frequent and quickly become recognizable.

Not everything uses `-esc`

Forms like `merg`, `dorm`, and `deschid` should be learned as strong chunks rather than forced into one visual template.

Movement and routine help memory

These verbs stick well when tied to commuting, study, and ordinary daily scenes.

Do not try to cover everything

At A1, a small reliable verb set matters more than broad weak coverage.

Pronoun + verb again

The best storage unit is still `eu merg`, `tu citești`, `ea primește`.

How these verbs live inside motion and routine

travel, transport, movement

Movement verbs make the day sound more alive and less textbook-like.

  • Eu merg la curs.
  • Noi pornim devreme.
  • Ei coboară din tren.

reading, sleeping, messages, object actions

These verbs help describe an ordinary human day without extra complexity.

  • Tu citești în tren.
  • Ea primește un mesaj.
  • El deschide laptopul.

Unit verbs and words

  • a merge
  • a citi
  • a primi
  • a dormi
  • a deschide
  • a porni
  • a coborî
  • tren
  • curs
  • mesaj

Ready-made phrases

  • Eu merg la curs.
  • Tu citești în tren.
  • Ea primește un mesaj.
  • El deschide laptopul.
  • Noi pornim devreme.

Nice to Know: forms with `-esc` stand out fast

Once a learner starts hearing `citesc`, `primesc`, and `pornesc`, Romanian present tense becomes much easier to identify by ear. It is a strong A1 listening anchor.

Mini dialogue: a moving day

Maya
Bună! Ce faci astazi?
Andrei
Eu merg la curs dimineața. Tu?
Maya
Eu citesc în tren. Primesc și mesaje de la prieteni.
Andrei
Asta-i o zi plin! Deschizi laptopul seara?
Maya
Nu, dorm devreme. Sunt obosită.
Andrei
Înțeleg! Noi pornim mâine dimineață. Vrei să vii?

Notice: different verbs — `merg`, `citesc`, `primesc`, `deschid`, `dorm` — in one exchange. This is real life, not a textbook table.
