`B1_U01` opens a new speaking mode: not just what happened, but what the background felt like, what used to happen, and how life looked before. `Imperfectul` is the tense for memory, atmosphere, and repetition.

By the end of this unit you can

  • talk about habits and repeated actions in the past
  • build the background of a scene: weather, atmosphere, ongoing process
  • distinguish `Imperfectul` from `Perfectul compus` in practice
  • tell a short memory or routine-based past story

Where `Imperfectul` becomes useful immediately

This unit is not about one more tense for its own sake. It matters when you say what used to happen, what the scene was like, and what was ongoing in the past.

Grammar Hack

Think background, not just past

`Imperfectul` often answers not what happened, but what used to happen or what the scene was like.

It is the tense of memory

It works especially well with `când eram mic`, `de obicei`, `în fiecare zi`, `pe vremea aceea`.

Contrast with perfect

`am mers` = one completed fact. `mergeam` = a habit, a process, or a repeated scene.

Start with chunks

It is more useful to keep ready-made chunks first: `mergeam des`, `ploua`, `era liniște`, `așteptam autobuzul`.

A real B1 shift

This is the first step toward longer, more narrative and reflective language.

Imperfectul vs Perfectul compus

If one finished fact matters, `Perfectul compus` is usually the right choice.

If the background, repetition, or duration matters, `Imperfectul` is usually the better fit.
