Passive voice for news, processes, and rules

`B2_U06` teaches formal style: news, processes, rules, and reports. Passive lets you talk about results without constantly saying who did it.

By the end of this unit you can

  • build passive with `a fi` + participle
  • make the participle agree with the subject
  • decide whether `de/de către` agent is needed
  • rewrite active headlines as passive headlines
  • describe a process in formal neutral style

Passive as focus management

In active voice, the doer matters. In passive voice, the object, process, or result matters. At B2, the key skill is choosing the right focus.

Grammar Hack

Formula

`a fi` in the needed tense + participle: `este verificat`, `a fost aprobat`, `vor fi analizate`.

Agreement is required

`cererea aprobată`, `documentele semnate`, `regulile schimbate`.

Agent is not always needed

If the doer is obvious or unimportant, passive is cleaner without it.

`de către` is more formal

`de către comisie` often sounds administrative and official.

Passive likes processes

Instructions and rules often describe steps without a doer: `formularul este completat online`.

Nice to Know

In news, passive can sometimes hide responsibility: `Au fost făcute greșeli` sounds more neutral than `Instituția a făcut greșeli`. At B2, it is useful to see not only grammar, but the focus effect.

Focus analysis

Explain why passive is better in the news line: `Au fost anunțate reguli noi` instead of `Autoritățile au anunțat reguli noi`.

Pasivul pune accentul pe reguli, nu pe autorități. Într-o știre scurtă, rezultatul este mai important decât agentul. De aceea propoziția sună mai neutră și mai formală.
